Mechanical Keyboard Switch Types Guide

Mechanical-switch labels describe broad behaviour, not a guaranteed experience. Case design, keycaps, mounting, lubrication and typing style can make two keyboards with the same nominal switch feel and sound different.

Linear switches

Linear switches move without a deliberate tactile bump. Many people like their smooth travel for gaming and rapid repeated keys, while others prefer more feedback for typing. Light versions can actuate accidentally if your hands rest heavily.

Tactile switches

A tactile switch adds a bump intended to signal actuation. The bump can be early, late, sharp or rounded, so the word tactile alone is not enough. Test samples when possible rather than choosing solely by stem colour.

Clicky switches

Clicky designs add audible feedback through a click jacket, bar or another mechanism. They can feel precise but may disturb coworkers, housemates or callers, and dampening the keycap does not always remove the internal click.

Compare force and travel

Review actuation force, bottom-out force, pre-travel and total travel from reliable specifications. Heavier is not automatically better; comfort depends on typing duration, technique and whether you routinely bottom out.

Confirm compatibility

For hot-swap boards, check the exact socket, pin layout, switch orientation and supported standards. Optical, magnetic and conventional mechanical switches are not automatically interchangeable. Switch changes may also affect the warranty.
