Espresso Grinder Dial-In Guide: Adjusting Dose, Time and Taste

Grinder numbers are not universal. Dial in by holding the coffee, dose and preparation steady, then changing one variable at a time.
Establish a recipe
Start with a measured dry dose and target beverage mass using a coffee scale. Distribute evenly and tamp consistently. Record bean, roast date, dose, output and time so the next change has context.
Adjust grind carefully
If water runs very quickly and the cup tastes thin, move finer in small steps. If flow stalls or tastes harsh and dry, move coarser. Follow the grinder’s direction and adjust while running only when instructed.
Control retention
Purge only the amount needed after an adjustment and account for retained grounds. Keep the hopper or single-dose workflow consistent. Large old residues can make the first shot after a change misleading.
Maintain the grinder
Brush and clean at the specified interval, keep water away from the motor and burr chamber, and inspect for damage or unusual contact. Burr wear, bean ageing and humidity can all shift the useful setting.
