Will a Robot Vacuum Work in Your Home?

Robot vacuums reduce routine floor work but still need preparation, maintenance and occasional conventional cleaning. Home layout matters more than a single suction number.
Map the floor surfaces
Measure door thresholds, rug pile and clearance beneath furniture. Dark, reflective or uneven surfaces can affect some sensors, while deep rugs may trap small wheels or brushes.
Look at navigation
Basic bump navigation can suit simple rooms; mapping systems improve room control and no-go zones. Check whether cloud accounts, Wi-Fi bands or a phone app are required.
Prepare for obstacles
Secure cables, curtains and small objects, and follow guidance for stairs. Pet accidents must be removed before a cleaning run; obstacle recognition is not a guarantee.
Plan maintenance
Empty the bin, clean filters and remove hair from brushes at the stated intervals. Compare replacement-part availability, dock space, noise, privacy controls and repair support.
Buying checklist
- Confirm dimensions, materials and compatibility.
- Compare maintenance, consumables and total cost.
- Read warranty, delivery and return terms.
- Stop using damaged or unsafe equipment.
