How to Weigh Carry-On Luggage at Home

Airlines can apply weight, dimension and item-count limits by fare and operating carrier. Check the current allowance for every flight segment before packing.
Use a luggage scale
Attach the scale to a strong top or side handle, lift the bag clear of the floor and hold it steady until the reading settles. Keep your back neutral and avoid lifting a heavy case if it is unsafe for you.
Use a bathroom scale
Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the packed bag and subtract the first reading. This is less precise for light bags, so repeat it and leave a margin below the airline limit.
Measure external dimensions
Measure the widest, tallest and deepest points with wheels, handles and stuffed pockets included. A soft bag can exceed its advertised depth when full, and some airlines use a sizing frame at the airport.
Prepare for variation
Home and airport scales may differ slightly. Keep essentials, batteries, medicine and documents within applicable cabin rules, and make a plan for removing nonessential items instead of relying on an exact borderline reading.
Before you decide
- Confirm model, measurements, materials and compatibility.
- Compare the complete cost and practical limitations.
- Read current safety, care, warranty and return information.
- Keep records of important specifications and seller terms.
