Portable Speaker EQ and Bass Guide

Portable speakers are tuned for convenience, so their bass and clarity can change dramatically with placement, listening distance and volume. Equalisation can help, but it works best as a small correction rather than a rescue tool.
Start with placement
Put the speaker on a firm, stable surface with its drivers and passive radiators unobstructed. A nearby wall can reinforce bass; a corner can add too much and make voices sound muddy. Before changing EQ, move the speaker in small steps and listen from your normal position.
Set source and speaker volume
Keep the phone, computer or music player high enough to provide a clean signal, then control the final level at the speaker. If either device sounds harsh, reduce it. Disable overlapping sound enhancers so two different apps are not boosting the same frequencies.
Adjust EQ in small steps
Begin flat. If speech is buried, slightly reduce low bass or gently lift the midrange. If the sound is thin, add only a modest low-frequency boost. Compare at equal loudness: a louder preset often seems better even when it is less balanced.
Protect headroom
Bass requires substantial amplifier and driver movement. Heavy boost at high volume can trigger limiting, pumping or audible rattling. When distortion appears, lower the bass or overall volume instead of continuing to boost.
Test representative tracks
Use familiar recordings with vocals, acoustic instruments and steady bass. Check quiet and louder listening levels, because many compact speakers automatically change their tuning as volume rises.
