Beginner Yoga Props Guide: Mats, Blocks, Straps and Blankets

Props can make positions more accessible, but they do not replace qualified guidance or individual medical advice. Begin with space, grip and stable support.
Start with the mat
Choose a mat with enough grip and a thickness that balances comfort with stability. Place it on a clean, level surface with clearance from furniture, heaters, pets and trip hazards.
Blocks and straps
Blocks can raise the floor and support reach; straps extend reach without forcing. Use purpose-made, undamaged props on a stable face. Do not stack blocks precariously or use a strap around the neck.
Blankets and bolsters
A firmly folded blanket can cushion knees or change seated height. Bolsters support restorative positions. Soft household pillows may compress unpredictably, so follow the instructor’s setup.
Build gradually
Use beginner instruction, move within a comfortable range and stop for sharp pain, dizziness, numbness or breathing difficulty. Clean shared props and let them dry fully before storage.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the exact product, material and intended use.
- Compare measurements and total ownership cost.
- Read current safety, care, return and delivery terms.
- Stop when instructions, condition or compatibility are uncertain.
