How to Clean and Store a Yoga Mat

Mat materials react differently to soaking, oils, alcohol, heat and sunlight. Follow the maker’s care instructions first and test any permitted cleaner on a small area.
Clean after routine use
Wipe the surface with a clean damp cloth or the recommended mat cleaner. Use only a small amount of mild solution when permitted; residue can make the surface slippery and attract dirt.
Handle deeper cleaning carefully
Do not soak a mat unless its instructions explicitly allow it. Avoid harsh disinfectants, essential oils and abrasive brushes unless approved for that material. Clean both sides without bending or stretching the mat aggressively.
Dry it completely
Lay the mat flat or hang it over a broad, smooth support with airflow. Keep it away from radiators and prolonged direct sun. Rolling a damp mat can trap odour and encourage microbial growth.
Store without damage
Roll the mat with the intended surface orientation, secure it loosely and store it in a cool, dry place. Keep heavy objects off it, clean shared props separately and replace a mat that is crumbling or no longer provides reliable grip.
