Men’s Loafer Fit Guide: Heel, Instep and Width

Loafers lack laces, so heel shape, instep volume and width must work together. Shoe size alone cannot describe the fit.

Measure both feet

Measure later in the day with the socks you intend to wear. Use the larger foot and the brand’s exact chart as a starting point.

Check the instep

The upper should hold the midfoot without sharp pressure or gaping. Leather may soften, but do not expect length or major structural width to change.

Assess heel movement

A small amount of initial movement can settle, but the heel should not lift dramatically or cause rubbing. Walk on a clean indoor surface before deciding.

Review construction

Compare lining, outsole grip, cushioning, flex point, resoling options, care and return policy. Insoles cannot correct every shape mismatch.
