Makeup Brush Types, Uses and Cleaning Guide

A useful brush set matches the products and techniques you actually use. Shape, density and fibre behaviour matter more than a large brush count.
Face brushes
Large soft brushes distribute loose powder lightly. Dense rounded or flat brushes build liquid and cream coverage. Angled shapes can follow cheeks, while smaller tapered brushes place highlight or setting powder precisely.
Eye and detail brushes
Flat shader brushes place colour, fluffy brushes diffuse edges, pencil brushes target small areas, and angled brushes suit brows or liner. A clean spoolie separates brow hairs and lashes.
Cleaning
Follow the manufacturer’s method. Wash permitted bristles with suitable cleanser, keep water away from the ferrule and handle, reshape gently and dry horizontally with airflow. Never share unclean brushes.
When to replace
Replace brushes that shed persistently, smell after cleaning, have loose ferrules or cannot be cleaned effectively. Store them dry and protected from bathroom splashes, dust and direct heat.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the exact product, material and intended use.
- Compare measurements and total ownership cost.
- Read current safety, care, return and delivery terms.
